Runbo Li, co-founder and CEO of Magic Hour AI, a platform for AI video generation. He is passionate about building tools that enable new creators, including himself!
What
He is building Magic Hour AI, a web app with multiple tools for generating AI videos, including animations, text-to-video, video-to-video, and face swaps.
Why
His parents run a small hot pot business, and Runbo Li runs their social media accounts. In recent years, short-form video has become a must, and sometimes it would take him up to a day to do the ideation, shooting, and editing. He wanted something that could solve that problem. When Stable Diffusion came out in 2022, he learned how to create AI-generated videos, and began posting music videos, and that's how Magic Hour was born.

How did you get started in the field of AI? What inspired you or motivated you to pursue this career path?
My background is in data science, so while I can't build products, I do have experience using Python for data analysis. To get started in AI, I learned how to build prototypes in Python notebooks. I think it's an under-known fact that you can build full-fledged prototypes in Python notebooks that take a user input and output an asset. I used these notebooks to make social media videos and for product development. My motivation was not to learn AI specifically, but just that I wanted to build products that solve my own problems. To this day, what motivates me is the excitement I get when I create an amazing video with nothing but code, and get to people appreciate it online. To me, that's the beauty of what's powerful about generative AI and creativity.
What are some of the current trends or developments in the field of AI that excite you or interest you the most?
The trend I'm most excited about is the one we want to play a major role in, which is making generative AI social. When Instagram launched, it was a photo filter app where you could make the photos on your phone more aesthetic. However, soon, your friends joined, and it was the social aspect that brought you back; the filters were just an excuse Generative AI reminds me a lot about early Instagram, and I want to find out if the time is ripe for an Instagram but with AI filters.
What is the most surprising or fascinating thing that you have learned from working with AI?
There's so much, but I'll give you my most personal learning, which is it's never been easier for a non-technical person to create a product. As a non-engineer, I've always put off starting a startup even though it's something I've always wanted to do. I had so many excuses. "I don't know how to code," "I don't know any technical co-founders. " What I've learned, in the past year and a half, is that most AI code is abstracted into one or two lines, you only need basic Python to get started, and ChatGPT can turn you into a 10x Engineer if you simply know how to prompt right. With these building blocks, you can ask an Engineer friend, like I did, to build a more complete product. The barriers are extremely low right now and they're dropping constantly. If there's one thing I want your readers to take away, it's that if doing a startup is what you want to do, there are no excuses, and now's the time to do it.
